Designed, CNC-milled, and hand-fabricated a massive 6-slab black oak media unit featuring inverted pyramid pockets pierced by compound-angle steel legs, finished with raw tung oil and custom welded footings.
PENNSYLVANIA BLACK OAK SLABS: Sourced 6 to 7 thick, heavy black oak slabs from Matthew Schaffer (acquired from an Amish mill near Oil City, PA). Prepped the lumber by registering a straight reference edge on each board to maximize usable width while preserving raw, unrefined edges and natural iron-stain weathering.
CNC-MILLED INVERTED PYRAMID POCKETS: Wrote 3D surface toolpaths (mechC_rough_375.sbp, mechC_finish_250_passB.sbp, mechB_finish_250.sbp) for 3-axis ShopBot CNC milling. Engineered compound-angle inverted pyramid pocket holes directly into the oak slabs to receive angled structural steel legs, creating a rigid 'pierced slab' structural joint.
INTEGRATED MEDIA NOOK & WELDED LEGS: Formed an asymmetrical structural lower-left nook sized specifically for a television. Self-taught TIG/MIG steel welding to fabricate custom heavy steel feet to stabilize the compound-angle leg assembly.
IMPERFECTIONISM & RAW FINISH: Finished minimalistically with a rich coating of natural tung oil. Preserved rough-sawn front edges, natural iron-reaction black streaks, and roughly cut end-grain sides as an embrace of imperfectionism in physical craft. Designed as a fully modular, disassemblable structure so large it barely cleared the doorway upon moving.
